Let's face it—housing is expensive. For individuals who make a decent income, obtaining affordable housing can be a daunting task. For those who make minimum wage or live on a fixed income, it's next to impossible. Consider this: An individual making a gross minimum wage in Washington State pays over 6o percent of his monthly wage towards renting an average one bedroom in King County. These people and those living on fixed incomes would be forced to the streets if it weren't for Affordable Housing.
Affordable housing units are often subsidized by the government and ensure tenants pay about 30 percent of their income towards rent. This leaves money for expenses such as food and utilities. Making housing affordable grants individuals the opportunity to live with dignity.
In addition, for those living with chronic and terminal illness, affordable housing is healthcare; a stable affordable living situation allows individuals to take medications as prescribed, be informed of and keep medical appointments, prepare nutritions meals and get needed rest.
There are many flavors of affordable housing. Check out the housing definitions and FAQ list to learn more.
